Software is not a machine to be completed.
It is a living system that grows, adapts, heals, and evolves.
Organic-Driven Development (ODD) is an experimental philosophy and engineering approach for cultivating software as a living system. Human groups cooperatively encode purpose, values, knowledge, and constraints; specialized agents express them through action; and the system continuously senses, remembers, repairs, and adapts.
ODD does not claim that software is biologically alive, and it is not yet a finished methodology. It uses life as a working model for discovering systems that remain healthy and coherent while their users, environment, and capabilities change.
Traditional development often assumes that requirements can be settled, a system can be completed, and change can be controlled. In practice, software lives inside changing organizations and environments. AI accelerates that change: producing code is becoming cheaper, while preserving intent, coherence, trust, and the ability to adapt is becoming more important.
ODD asks two different questions:
How do we cultivate software that can change without losing its identity?
How do we align local agent behavior with the health of the whole system?
An organic system:
The biological analogy is a map, not a literal identity:
| Biology | ODD working model |
|---|---|
| Genome | Purpose, values, constraints, and retained knowledge |
| Gene | Reusable policy, rule, or skill |
| Cell | Runtime agent or worker |
| Nervous system | Events, messages, and observation pathways |
| Organ | Service with a specialized responsibility |
| Organism | A coherent software system |
| Ecosystem | Users, organizations, markets, and other systems |
Cooperation does not mean eliminating all competition or disagreement. ODD is interested in the mechanisms that keep local optimization, failure, and conflict from damaging the health of the whole.
Humans are not a single director standing above many agents. Different people carry domain knowledge, values, risk awareness, user understanding, and visions of the future. When those contributions are reconciled and encoded into durable artifacts, they become gene-like parts of the software genome. The organization is therefore a cooperative author of evolutionary direction, not merely a source of implementation labor.
This repository is a research program, not a declaration of a solved method. Claims should become explicit hypotheses, then earn their place through working systems, measurements, criticism, and reproducible experiments.
