Cicada: Zero-Trust Runtime Enforcement Gateway & Kernel Firewall for Autonomous AI Agents

License: Apache 2.0 Go 1.25+ Zenodo DOI OWASP Agentic Top 10 Latency p95

⚠️ IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: This is an experimental project born out of pure necessity. It was completely vibe-coded over 8 months using 2026 frontier LLMs directed by a single systems architect. It is a functional architectural proof-of-concept, not a polished enterprise software suite. It needs a cleanup, and it contains technical debt (such as monolithic handlers). The plumbing is yours to fix; the blueprint is yours to use.

🎯 The Core Mission

Cicada was built because autonomous AI agents are running riot without network-level protections. Content-layer filtering (LLM-judging-LLM prompt wrappers) is probabilistic, adds seconds of latency, and fails under indirect prompt injection. Cicada introduces a deterministic, sub-millisecond network, cryptographic, and kernel-level perimeter around autonomous AI agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool calls to prevent catastrophic autonomous failure loops, data exfiltration, and unauthorized execution.

⚡ 60-Second Standalone Hero Quickstart (Zero Dependencies)

You do not need PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, or external LLM API keys to test the Go Sentry_Gateway data plane. Run the gateway in standalone simulation mode and fire real attack payloads at it from your terminal in under 60 seconds:

1. Boot the Gateway (or run the verification suite)

cd Sentry_Gateway

# Option A: Run the automated 8-Gate Zero-Trust verification test suite
go test -v ./cmd/sentry ./internal/license ./internal/injection ./internal/semantic ./internal/gossip

# Option B: Boot the live standalone gateway on :8080 (zero external dependencies)
CICADA_DEV_MODE=true CICADA_SIMULATION_MODE=true go run ./cmd/sentry

2. Fire Live Attack Vectors Against :8080

Open a second terminal and run these 5 curl commands against the running gateway:

✅ Test 1: Benign Agent Call (200 OK in ~0.3ms)

curl -s -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/agent/proxy \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \

🏗️ Architecture: The 15-Stage Matthews Enforcement Framework (MEF)

Cicada implements the Matthews Enforcement Framework (MEF)—a deterministic runtime security pipeline that evaluates every agent tool call, MCP JSON-RPC invocation, and LLM request across 15 sequential gates before a single packet leaves your perimeter:

Lock-Free P2P Gossip Quarantine Mesh

When any gateway node detects a critical breach (such as a CICADA_CANARY_* honeytoken trigger or an operator kill-switch from the Aegis mobile app), it broadcasts an Ed25519 + FIPS 204 ML-DSA-65 signed quarantine packet across the P2P mesh. Every node updates its local quarantine map via sync/atomic.Pointer copy-on-write—achieving zero mutex contention (2µs read latency) on the hot path:

🛠️ Contribution Rules & Refactoring with AI Agents

If you are an architecture purist looking to criticize monolithic functions, please redirect that energy into opening a Pull Request. AI agents will easily map this repository based on the provided /docs. Help modularize the handlers, optimize the slice lookups, and polish the edges.

🤖 Refactoring Prompt Example

When pointing your AI coding assistant (Cursor, Claude, Windsurf, Antigravity) at this repository, you can run prompts like:

Read `/docs/Platform_Documentation.md` and inspect `Sentry_Gateway/cmd/sentry/main.go`. Refactor one inline handler (e.g. `handleLLMProxy`) out of `main.go` into a dedicated package inside `internal/server/handlers/llm.go`. Ensure all OPA context and error handling remains identical. Run `go test ./...` to verify zero regression.

📊 Performance Benchmarks (k6 Load Test)

After replacing per-request PostgreSQL lookups on the hot path with a singleflight-protected Redis + in-memory cache (internal/agentcache) and sync/atomic.Pointer lock-free reads, the Go Sentry_Gateway was benchmarked under sustained load (Sentry_Gateway/tests/load/proxy_load.js):

MetricPre-Optimization (Direct DB)Post-Optimization (Sentry_Gateway)Improvement
Median Latency (p50)265.0 ms6.24 ms42x faster
95th Percentile (p95)1,610.0 ms19.01 ms84x faster
99th Percentile (p99)2,510.0 ms50.94 ms49x faster
Standalone In-Memory Gate CheckN/A0.02 ms – 1.15 msSub-millisecond
Unexpected 5xx / Socket Errors0.12%0.00% (7,472 / 7,472 reqs)100% reliability

📄 Mathematical Foundations & Academic Citation

The formal mathematical proofs behind Cicada's zero-trust enforcement model, non-LLM lexical intent scoring, and bounded delegation chains are published in:

Launching the Full Stack with Docker Compose

# 1. Copy example environment configuration
cp Core_API/.env.example Core_API/.env

# 2. Boot PostgreSQL, Redis, Core API, EAKF Daemon, Sentry Gateway, and Portals
docker compose up --build -d

# 3. Run database migrations
docker compose exec core-api php artisan migrate --force
