airc mcp starts an MCP server over stdio for use with AI agent hosts
(Claude Desktop, OpenCode, Cursor, etc.).

| Tool | Parameters | Description |
|---|---|---|
connect | server, nick, channels | Connect to an IRC server (starts daemon, enables logging) |
disconnect | — | Disconnect and stop the daemon |
join | channel | Join a channel |
part | channel, reason? | Leave a channel |
say | target, message | Send a message |
fetch | channel?, last? | Fetch unread messages |
status | — | Connection status and channel info |
logs | last?, channel? | Recent events from in-memory buffer |
CSV logging is enabled automatically on connect.
The airc binary runs in two modes:
airc connect): spawns a background process that
maintains a persistent IRC connection and listens on a Unix socket.
The connection survives between agent invocations. This means an agent can call airc fetch to poll for new messages without
maintaining a long-running process.
The client library automatically reconnects with exponential backoff (1s initial, 60s max) when the connection drops. During disconnection, outgoing messages are queued and flushed on reconnection. Channels are re-joined automatically.
Communication between CLI/MCP and the daemon uses Unix domain sockets with length-prefixed protobuf frames:
[4 bytes big-endian length][protobuf payload]
Each connection handles exactly one request/response pair. Proto definitions
in proto/ are the single source of truth for all shared data models.
