Round 3: Tested 128K context on a 3090 with real code (Django) and a novel. Finding one thing is solid, counting is hopeless (r/LocalLLM)

People asked on my last post whether these models can actually use 128K or just fit it. So I tested it, on Moby-Dick and on the Django source since that's what most of us actually paste in. Setup: Qwen3.8 27B Q4\_K\_M, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B Q4\_K\_M, Nemotron 3.5 Bolt (2-bit), one 3090, llama.cpp,…

Round 2: Nemotron 3.5 Bolt fits its full 256K context on one 3090, Qwen3.8 27B maxes out at 216K (VRAM + speed at 0/64K/128K fill) (r/LocalLLM)

Last time I posted Bolt vs Qwen3.8 27B on a 3090 and the top comment was basically "at 16K context, ok." While that wasn't the issue, I ran the same two files on the 3090 again and only changed the context size. Quick version: * Bolt (NVIDIA's 2-bit 74B) loads its full native 256K with every layer…

Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B (NVIDIA’s 2-bit GGUF) vs Qwen3.8 27B Q4_K_M on a 3090 and a 5090: 2x the tok/s, fewer tasks passed, and the gap is almost all tool calling (480 trials, data included) (r/LocalLLM)

NVIDIA dropped Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B yesterday, the 24GB compressed version of their new Nemotron 3.5 Super VL (120B-A12B). Their launch post ([link](https://x.com/NVIDIARTXSpark/status/2110813633697694003)) has an “Intelligence vs Speed” chart that puts Qwen3.8 27B Q4 above Bolt on GDPval and…

Each folder is one study: the frozen task suite, validation scripts, sanitized trial results, environment records, charts, and a summary of findings.

StudyQuestionHeadline
001-24gb-compressionDoes a native 2-bit 74B mixture-of-experts model outperform a 27B Q4_K_M model on one 24GB card?Nemotron fit fully on a 24GB RTX 3090 and decoded at 85.2 tok/s vs Qwen's 41.5, but Qwen passed more strict tasks on both GPUs. The gap was concentrated in tool calling.

How these are run

Each study records pinned model artifacts, runtime and hardware manifests, frozen tasks and seeds, deterministic scoring, and trial-level results. The 001 study explains its setup and verification commands.
